Advent Devotions
We will post devotionals on Monday, Wednesday, Friday during the season of Advent. We have also included some of the devotions we experienced together last Advent in 2022. Our focus last year was on Jesus as the “Prince of Peace” and these devotions accompanied our teaching series, providing practical ways for us to experience that Prince of Peace in our everyday lives.
Zechariah and Joseph
The Prince of Peace is often disruptive, even when we’ve been under His rule for years.
Herod and the Jewish Leaders
Not everyone receives God’s peace. Not everyone received the Prince of Peace when He first arrived either.
Love and Faith Light of the World
Firelight in particular draws us in and opens us up. Our eyes are drawn to light. We share confidences around campfires. We risk romance over candlelight dinners. Light signals safety and connection.
At the table with Jesus
Special events, holiday meals, family gatherings, time with friends—there are many opportunities to socialize in this season. Many opportunities for awkward or confrontational interactions. It can be unsettling to attend or even to anticipate these gatherings. Can we bring Jesus, the Prince of Peace, along with us to these celebrations?
Jesus and Simon
“Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman?
Luke 7:44a ESV
Simon the Pharisee
[She] wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.”
Luke 7:38b ESV
Jesus and the Woman
Jesus the Prince of Peace offers peace to those around Him who repent and accept His rule.
A Woman of the City
Tears are rather small. How many would it take to clean Jesus’ feet? More than a decorous few.
God has not forgotten you
Until the angels showed up, the shepherds had no idea what was happening nearby. This wasn’t unusual. Shepherds spent their lives on the edges of life, not in the inner circles of any community.
Same Old Peace?
What kind of peace did the birth of Jesus bring? And how? By what means does this peace come to us, we who have not seen the angelic host standing before us?
Share What You’ve Been Shown
If you’ve got great news to share, why only tell a few insignificant people?
