Light of the World – Peace

Jesus’ coming brings light to dark places and guides us into the way of peace.

Light brings peace.

This is true physically. When we are in physical darkness, we don’t move freely and easily. We are less certain if something is safe or dangerous. When light is introduced, everything comes into focus. Suddenly those threatening shapes are rendered benign. Anxiety subsides. The space feels peaceful.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

Isaiah 9:2 ESV

Zechariah’s prophecy (after the birth of his son, John the Baptist) references this line from Isaiah.

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.””

Luke 1:76-79 ESV

Simeon called Jesus a light for revelation to the Gentiles.

““Lord, now You are letting your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a Light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.””

Luke 2:29-32 ESV

Light reveals things and brings understanding. “I see” is used physically and mentally. Seeing God’s promises come true brings peace, as it did for Simeon. When we see, when we understand, something in our soul settles and rests.

Consider:

How has the Holy Spirit shone light on your path and directed your steps in the way of peace?

Remember:

When you see light shining in darkness, be reminded of the Light of salvation and the peace only Jesus can bring.
